The lagoon is a transitional aquatic environment, where the freshwater of rivers and streams meets the saltwater of the sea. It is a particularly important ecosystem for biodiversity because it is populated by a multitude of plant and animal life.
The Nora lagoon is located in the municipality of Pula, on the southwestern coast of Sardinia.
It covers an area of approximately 55 hectares and includes the branched system of canals and islets that characterize the mouth of its stream, the Rio Arrieras.
The main body of water is separated from the sea by the natural peninsula of Fradis Minoris and a long artificial embankment. The peninsula is an interesting example of a Tyrrhenian bench, covered in lush Mediterranean scrub vegetation and flora typical of brackish wetlands.
Ducks, herons, egrets, kingfishers, and various species of gulls, including the rare Audouin's gull, find shelter in the Nora lagoon. Its waters are also home to sea bass, eels, white bream, gilt-head bream, and grey mullet.
In the Nora lagoon, fishing is practiced using traditional methods, respecting the ecosystem's natural cycle. It's a sustainable economic activity that doesn't deplete resources and contributes to environmental protection.
